Tesla Theater's Browser Trick Gets You More Streaming Services Than the Official Tiles
Tesla Theater has been around since September 2019 (software version 10), and the official tile lineup has always been a little thin. Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu were the original three, and back then they only worked on WiFi while parked. Disney+ showed up officially in July 2021 with the 2021.24 update. Then, in December 2023, a Holiday software build quietly pulled the Disney+ tile for a lot of US owners. So the official story has been: slow additions, occasional subtractions.
But there's a browser trick that Tesla owners have been circulating, and it's worth knowing about.
What the Trick Actually Does
If you open the car's browser and navigate directly to certain streaming sites, you don't get the cramped mobile web experience you'd expect. Apple TV, HBO Max, Paramount+, Peacock, Disney+, and Prime Video all launch into a fullscreen, app-like interface when opened from the Tesla browser. Something that actually behaves like a dedicated app, not a thumbnail-sized webpage with a virtual keyboard in the way.
That's meaningfully better than most people assume is possible outside the official tile system.
Why This Probably Isn't an Accident
Code archives from 2024 listed Apple TV and Prime Video as unused source names inside the Theater system. They were there in the code, just never surfaced as official tiles. That suggests Tesla had these integrations in progress (or at least seriously considered them) and never flipped the switch.
Whether that's because of licensing negotiations that fell through or just deprioritized features, I don't know. But the fact that the browser renders them in fullscreen mode points to deliberate work happening at some point. This could mean the official tile versions were planned and shelved. One possibility is that these fullscreen browser wrappers are a test path that simply stayed in place.
And Twitch and TikTok have both appeared among the default Theater tiles at various points since launch, which at least confirms Tesla is willing to add non-obvious content sources when they feel like it.
The Limitations Haven't Changed
Playback still only works in Park mode. It's been that way since 2019. You can use Theater while charging (the main real-world use case), while parked, or in Camp Mode. But you're not getting in-motion video on the center screen through any of these, official tiles or browser workaround.
That's a reasonable restriction. It's also not going away.
Practical Takeaway
If you're waiting at a Supercharger and the official Theater tiles don't have what you want, open the browser and go directly to the streaming site. Apple TV and Prime Video in particular are worth trying, since they've never made it to official tile status but apparently render well. Disney+ through the browser may also work better than having no Disney+ tile at all (which is where a lot of US owners landed after that December 2023 update removed it).
It's not a polished solution. But it's a better situation than most people realize.
