Tesla Upgrades the Affordable Model Y With a Better Screen and Black Headliner
The cheaper Model Y trims just got two features that used to cost more. Tesla is now including an all-black headliner and a 16-inch center screen with higher resolution on both the RWD and AWD Model Y, previously only available on Premium trims. It's a real improvement, not a paper spec bump.
The Screen Upgrade Matters More Than You'd Think
Moving to the 16-inch higher-resolution display is a meaningful change. A bigger, sharper screen affects daily use more than most spec differences. Everything you do in a Tesla, you do on that screen. And I've heard the complaint about the old base screen from owners often enough that removing it as a reason to upgrade is worth noting.
The black headliner is mostly aesthetic, but it's the right aesthetic. The lighter headliner on old base trims always looked a bit mismatched against darker interior trim pieces.
What You're Still Not Getting
To be clear about the tradeoffs: RWD and AWD trims still don't include acoustic-lined windows, ventilated (A/C) seats, a glass roof, or the same amount of storage as Premium. These aren't small omissions. Acoustic windows make a noticeable difference at highway speed. Ventilated seats matter a lot if you live somewhere hot. And the glass roof... well, some people care about that more than others.
So this isn't the Premium experience at a lower price. It's the base experience with a better screen and a cleaner headliner.
The Pricing Picture
Model Y RWD is $39,990 with 321 miles of range. AWD is $41,990 with 294 miles (the AWD actually rates lower on range, which is worth knowing before you assume dual motors means better everything). These prices include the new features.
The $2,000 gap between RWD and AWD buys you more motors and less range. If you're not in a climate with serious winters, RWD at $39,990 with 321 miles makes a reasonable case for itself.
Timing: There's a Model 3 Deal Running Right Now
If you're cross-shopping the Model Y with the Model 3, Tesla is currently offering one year of free Supercharging on Model 3 Premium and Performance trims, ending June 15, 2026. At peak Supercharger rates of $0.45 to $0.60 per kWh, one year at average mileage (12,000 miles) works out to roughly $1,000 to $1,500. That's real money, and it makes the Model 3 Premium RWD at $42,490 look more competitive next to the upgraded Model Y RWD at $39,990.
Both are better equipped than they were. The question is which shape makes sense for your life.
Bottom Line
This is the kind of quiet update that makes buying decisions cleaner. The affordable Model Y was already the practical choice for most buyers. Adding the bigger screen and black headliner removes two of the more visible reasons to step up to Premium. The remaining gaps (ventilated seats, acoustic windows, glass roof, storage) are real, but they're also easier to rationalize away than a smaller, lower-res screen center console you're staring at every day.
If you were on the fence about whether the base trims were good enough, this nudges them closer to yes.
