20,000 Miles Without Touching the Wheel: David Moss and What FSD Actually Looks Like in 2026
David Moss hit 20,000 consecutive intervention-free miles on Full Self-Driving as of July 27, 2026. That's not a rounding error or a self-reported number. It's verified via telemetry pulled directly from his Model 3 by Omar Qazi's FSD Database, which logs disengagements to a tenth of a mile. Twenty thousand miles. Tenth of a mile precision.
I've been following this story since Moss drove coast-to-coast last December, and I keep coming back to it because it's the clearest picture I have of where FSD actually stands right now. Not in a controlled test environment, not on a closed track. On real roads, across real states, in real weather.
How We Got Here
Moss had a previous streak that ended at 12,961 miles in January 2026, stopped by snow and single-digit temperatures in rural Wisconsin. That's not a FSD failure. That's a legitimately hard edge case for any autonomous system, and it ended a 30-state run. He got back on the road.
In December 2025, he drove 2,732 miles from the Tesla Diner in Los Angeles to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 2 days and 20 hours with zero FSD disengagements. Tesla later called this the first verified coast-to-coast autonomous drive in the company's history, and featured it as an official customer story in March 2026.
Then in late May 2026, he drove 3,760 miles across Canada from Horseshoe Bay near Vancouver to a Tesla showroom in Halifax, again with zero interventions. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's AI software VP, publicly congratulated him. That's an engineer acknowledging a real data point, not a PR department doing its job.
How the Numbers Actually Get Verified
The FSD Database isn't self-reported. Qazi's tracker pulls telemetry directly from the vehicle and records disengagements to a tenth of a mile. So when Moss says 20,000 miles, there's an actual paper trail behind it.
Tesla added a live streak counter in FSD v14.3.4 in June 2026. It resets when a driver brakes, steers manually, or cancels navigation. Before that, v14.2 introduced a Self Driving Stats panel tracking the ratio of autonomous to manual miles. Both are part of what Tesla calls FSD gamification in the 2026 Summer Update.
Moss was the first driver to hit 10,000 miles on the in-car streak counter since Tesla added it. Tesla added confetti animations for that milestone. Which is either charming or slightly embarrassing depending on your tolerance for confetti. The milestone is real regardless of how it gets celebrated.
What Else the Summer Update Brings
Tesla started rolling out the 2026 Summer Update around July 26, 2026 (four seasonal software updates per year, this is the summer cycle). FSD gamification is part of it, but the change I'm actually paying attention to is Traction Control Modes coming to Model 3 and Model Y.
This was previously available on Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. Not on the two models that make up the vast majority of Tesla's fleet. The new modes are Auto (normal driving), Slippery Surface (icy or wet roads), and Stuck Assist (snow, mud, or sand). The mode resets to Auto at the start of each drive. You find it under Controls > Dynamics > Traction Control Mode.
For most owners driving in temperate conditions, Auto is probably fine. But if you're in a region with actual winters or unpaved roads, Slippery Surface and Stuck Assist give you explicit control that simply didn't exist on these models before. That's a practical improvement.
The Summer Update also includes Navigation improvements, wrap customization sharing and storing, and expanded Tesla app functionality. I don't have specific details on those beyond what Tesla has disclosed, so I'll wait until I can test them.
The Infrastructure Behind It
Tesla's Terafab facility is projected to produce over 1 terawatt of AI compute per year. That capacity will support FSD development, among other Tesla AI projects. Intel joined the project in April 2026, contributing manufacturing expertise.
Moss's 20,000 miles is what that compute investment looks like when it reaches pavement. Terafab is the training infrastructure. His Model 3 crossing Canada without touching the wheel is the output.
What to Make of It
This could mean FSD is closer to actually living up to its name than I expected a year ago. Or it could mean Moss is exceptionally skilled at selecting routes that play to FSD's current strengths. Probably some of both. But 20,000 miles of verified telemetry across multiple trips, two countries, and 30 states is a hard number to dismiss. And the fact that Tesla's own AI VP is publicly noting it suggests they're not dismissing it either.
