FSD Is Finally Going to Learn How You Drive

The two things that make me reach for the wheel most on FSD aren't safety situations. They're annoyances. The car won't stay in the HOV lane, and it parks in the wrong spot. Every single time.

That might be about to change. On July 18, 2026, Elon Musk hinted that FSD would start learning individual driver preferences. Two days later, on July 20, he confirmed that parking spot selection and how the car enters a spot (pull-in versus backing in) would be part of upcoming improvements.

The Lane Problem Is Real, and There Are Legal Consequences

There's already a setting in the FSD menu to enable HOV lane travel. But the car doesn't consistently stay there. FSD will drift into adjacent lanes and then just... stay. This is left lane camping, and it's illegal in more than 30 U.S. states. Some Tesla owners have already gotten tickets because of it.

The fix being discussed: FSD would remember your highway lane preferences and actually stick to them. Stay in the carpool lane. Don't cruise in the passing lane and create a rolling roadblock.

That's not a minor quality-of-life thing. If you're in a state with active HOV enforcement, a distracted FSD costs you real money.

Parking Is the Number One Reason Drivers Take Over

According to Elon Musk, parking is the single most common reason drivers intervene on FSD. That tracks. The car will find a spot, but not necessarily your spot. Whether it pulls in or backs in seems to depend on whatever the system decides, not what you'd prefer.

And FSD v14.3.5, as of July 13, 2026, still had active parking issues. So this isn't legacy behavior from two years ago. It's current.

The planned improvements are specific: where the car parks, and how it enters the spot. There's also mention of FSD learning to reliably pull into the correct driveway. (Right now, apparently, this is described as "relatively rare." Which is not what you want to hear about autonomous driveway navigation.)

What "Learning Preferences" Actually Means

Tesla's stated goal here is to get to a point where drivers only intervene during critical safety situations, not because FSD is doing something safe but wrong. Preference-based interventions are the category to eliminate.

That framing matters. Right now FSD can't distinguish between "I grabbed the wheel because something dangerous happened" and "I grabbed the wheel because you parked six spots from the entrance when I wanted the close one." If the system learns those are different, and starts remembering your individual choices, that changes how useful FSD is day to day.

This could mean FSD eventually builds a profile per driver, learning from repeated interventions in the same context rather than requiring manual configuration. But that's speculation on the mechanism. Nothing confirmed on how it actually works yet.

The Boring Stuff Is What Actually Matters

The autonomous driving news cycle likes big numbers and dramatic capability claims. But for daily usability, what matters is: does it stay in my preferred lane, does it park where I want, does it know my driveway. Not edge cases. Routine stuff.

FSD is moving closer to unsupervised capability generally, and these preference improvements are part of that progression. You can't offer unsupervised driving if the car is constantly making choices the owner has to override for non-safety reasons. Getting the mundane right is how this actually works in practice.

If they pull this off, the most common reason to intervene goes away. That's a meaningful shift.
