FSD Supervised Rolls Into Czechia, and October Could Crack Open the Rest of Europe

FSD Supervised Rolls Into Czechia, and October Could Crack Open the Rest of Europe

Tesla's FSD Supervised is now legal in Czechia as of today, September 21. That makes seven EU member states total. The list has grown fast since April: Lithuania (May 20), Estonia (May 29), Denmark (June 9), Belgium (June 10), Slovenia (September 7), and now the Czech Republic.

The way this cascades is straightforward. The Dutch road safety authority (RDW) issued a provisional EU type approval on April 10. Individual member states then review that approval and decide whether to recognize it. The Czech Ministry of Transport just finished months of expert review and talks with Tesla and signed off. Czech owners with AI4 hardware should see an over-the-air update in the coming days, no service center trip required.

Level 2. Not What the Name Implies.

Worth being clear on what's actually getting approved here. FSD Supervised in Europe is classified as Level 2. Driver stays engaged, eyes on road, legally responsible for everything the car does. It's not robotaxi mode. And I've seen enough coverage frame this as Tesla getting "full self-driving" approved in Europe to think it's worth saying plainly: that's not the story.

The European classification is actually more honest than the American product name. "Supervised" is doing real work. You're the driver. The system assists. Keep your hands available.

The October 6 Vote Is the One to Watch

Seven countries is real progress, but it's still smaller markets. Germany, France, Italy, and Spain haven't cleared it yet. That could change at once if the EU Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles votes favorably on October 6.

The threshold: a qualified majority of 15 out of 27 member states representing at least 65% of the EU population. Given the big four (Germany especially) account for a large share of that population, the math gets interesting. But a favorable vote doesn't mean automatic rollout across all remaining markets. It likely means each country still processes approval, just with the committee ruling as a foundation.

One possibility is that the smaller-country cascade we've watched since May was partly about building political momentum for exactly this vote. Seven countries clearing it without incident is a better argument to remaining regulators than zero countries having any experience with it.

What Actually Matters If You Own One

If you're a Tesla owner in Europe, the first question is hardware. FSD Supervised requires AI4. Older vehicles don't qualify regardless of country. Check your car's hardware version through the Tesla app if you're not sure.

If you're in Czechia and you have the hardware, the update arrives OTA the same way any software does. No appointment, no visit. Tesla will push it in the coming days.

Seven down, a lot of Europe still waiting. The October 6 vote is what matters next.
