Tesla's Showrooms Are Bare. Here's What That Tells Us About Q3.

If you've checked Tesla's US inventory recently, you've probably noticed something: there's almost nothing there. Heading into the end of Q3 2026, showrooms are largely empty, display vehicles have been sold, and if you want delivery before the quarter closes, you're basically choosing between Model Y RWD and Model Y All-Wheel-Drive. That's it. Most other Model 3 and Model Y trims are sold out in the US.

This is worth paying attention to, because it tells you something real about demand heading into the quarterly delivery count.

What the Analysts Are Expecting

Forecasts for Q3 2026 deliveries range from 435,000 (Goldman Sachs) to 482,000 (JPMorgan), with a median analyst estimate around 449,000 units. For reference, Tesla delivered 497,099 vehicles in Q3 2025. So the open question is whether they can get close to that number again, or at least beat a consensus that's already set a fair bit below it.

Empty showrooms with days left in the quarter suggest the answer leans positive. But it's not a guarantee. Inventory can run thin for reasons other than surging demand (production timing, transit bottlenecks, model transitions). The more meaningful detail here is that display vehicles are being cleared out too. That's not standard end-of-quarter inventory management.

Context From Q2

Q2 2026 came in at 480,126 deliveries, a 25% increase year-over-year. Of those, 467,762 were Model 3 and Model Y (so basically everything, as usual). That was a strong quarter, and it set a higher baseline for what Q3 needs to look like.

Whether Q3 matches Q2 depends on factors I can't see from the outside. But the stripped-out inventory picture heading into the final stretch is consistent with a quarter that's trending well, not one that's running out of steam.

Optimus Gen 3 Renders Leaked From the App

Separate from the delivery picture, renders of an Optimus Gen 3 surfaced inside the Tesla Android app this week, labeled 'gen3'. The design is noticeably cleaner than Gen 2. Matte black fairings now cover the lower legs where Gen 2 had exposed mechanical linkages and gold knee/shin plating. There are also flexible covers sealing the torso-to-upper-thigh joint, which is presumably there to keep debris out of the mechanism during actual work. The contoured champagne gold body is still part of the design.

The hands still carry 22 degrees of freedom. And no official reveal date has been announced as of late September 2026.

For a sense of how committed Tesla is to this program: they tore out the Model S and Model X production lines at Fremont to make room for Optimus manufacturing, targeting one million robots per year from that facility alone. A dedicated Optimus factory at Giga Texas has its steel frame nearing completion, with a 2027 production start as the target. The longer-term stated goal from Musk is 10 million units annually.

Whether any of those production targets actually land is something we'll be watching closely. The app render at least confirms the design is moving past Gen 2 in a meaningful way, not just an incremental refresh.

What Comes Next

Delivery numbers come out after Q3 closes. Until then, showrooms running down to just two Model Y variants available for end-of-quarter delivery is about as clean a demand signal as you get in the final weeks of a quarter. The analysts set a bar around 449,000. Q2 cleared 480,000. We'll see where this lands.
