Tesla's Optimus Factory Is Being Built for a Number That Seems Impossible

Ten million robots per year. That's Tesla's stated long-term production target for Optimus at Giga Texas. I've been following this company for years and I still had to re-read that number. Not a quarterly goal or a stretch target buried in investor deck footnotes. The factory they're actively building, right now, is designed for that output.

The actual timeline here is moving faster than most coverage suggests, so let me walk through what's real versus what's aspiration.

The Fremont Line Is Already Running

Tesla's Fremont factory began mass producing Optimus Gen 3 in January 2026. This is a pilot line. Tesla expects it to build tens of thousands of units in 2026. That's modest against the long-term targets, but it's actual production. Not renders, not conference demos. Units off a line.

And separately, Tesla is standing up a dedicated one million unit capacity pilot line at Fremont. (I know, calling something with a million-unit target a "pilot line" is confusing. But that's how they're categorizing it, and it suggests they're treating Fremont as a proving ground while Texas scales.)

The Texas Factory Is a Different Thing Entirely

Tesla broke ground on a dedicated Optimus factory at Giga Texas in late March 2026. This is part of a 5.2+ million square foot expansion of the North Campus. In physical terms, the expansion runs over 4,000 feet, which is nearly the length of the existing vehicle factory. This isn't an addition. It's basically doubling the campus footprint.

Tesla is targeting high-volume production at Giga Texas beginning summer 2027. So roughly 15 to 16 months from groundbreaking to high-volume output. That's aggressive for any manufacturing facility, let alone one this size. Whether they actually hit that date is the first real test worth watching.

About That 10 Million Target

The 10 million per year figure is where every conversation about Optimus eventually stops. You either think Tesla is building the most consequential factory in decades, or you think the number is fantasy. Possibly both are true simultaneously.

What I find more grounding than the target number is the infrastructure being committed. A 5.2+ million square foot North Campus expansion. A Fremont pilot line running concurrently with Texas construction. A separate one million unit line being stood up at Fremont while the main facility breaks ground. This is not a company hedging on whether robotics matters. The physical commitment is substantial regardless of whether 10 million is a real production ceiling or a negotiating position with reality.

The summer 2027 target for high-volume Giga Texas production is the specific date I'm watching. That's concrete enough to hold them to. We'll know within about a year what "high volume" actually means in unit terms.

The Rest of 2026 in Brief

On the car side, FSD hit 1.48 million active subscriptions in Q2 2026, up 56% year over year. And about 55% of new North American Tesla deliveries came with an FSD subscription as of Q2. That's a meaningful attach rate. The product is apparently good enough now that more than half of buyers are willing to pay for it at delivery rather than waiting to see if it improves.

Tesla also has an October 1, 2026 Roadster unveiling scheduled at a venue near SpaceX's McGregor, Texas test site. The Model S was sunset earlier this year. Make of that what you will in terms of where Tesla sees its product lineup heading.

But the Optimus factory is the story. That's where the construction equipment is and, apparently, where Tesla thinks the next decade lives.
