Four hundred seventy-eight miles of EPA-rated range from an electric truck. That number stopped me. The 205 kWh Ultium battery pack in the 2026 GMC Sierra EV Denali is doing something that no other production EV truck has managed, and it showed up in real-world testing too: a New York to Maine road trip with 400-plus miles of actual range. That's not a press-release number that evaporates when you turn on the heat.

But then you get to the fine print, and the fine print matters.

What a 205 kWh Battery Actually Means

The Sierra EV Denali makes 760 hp in Max Power Mode and 785 lb-ft of torque from a dual-motor e4WD setup. The 205 kWh pack is enormous. For comparison, most long-range EVs carry 75 to 100 kWh. This truck carries more than twice that.

That battery enables the range. It also creates the charging problem.

GMC supports up to 350 kW DC fast charging, which is genuinely fast. But at public charging rates, the cost to fill that 205 kWh pack runs comparable to what you'd spend on gasoline. The "fuel savings" math that usually works in EVs' favor basically disappears here. You're paying to haul a lot of electrons, and electrons at public chargers aren't cheap.

If you have home charging (and spend the $98,600 starting price, so presumably you have a house with a garage), the math improves. But road-trip charging on this thing won't feel like sticking it to the oil companies.

The Truck Specs Themselves Are Solid

Towing is rated at 10,500 lbs. Ground clearance sits at 8.95 inches, with the air suspension adding roughly plus or minus 2.0 inches depending on mode. Rear-wheel steering helps with maneuverability despite the truck's size.

The eTrunk (frunk, basically) gives you 11.0 cubic feet of covered storage up front. The bed is 5 feet 11 inches and 57.5 cubic feet. Open the MultiPro Midgate and the usable length extends to 10 feet 10 inches. That's a practical feature for anyone actually hauling things, not just posturing in a parking lot.

Seating is 5. That's the configuration.

The Weight Situation

The curb weight is 8,987 lbs. Nearly 9,000 lbs before you add passengers or cargo. This isn't unique to GMC (Rivian and Ford have the same problem), but it's worth saying plainly: these trucks are heavy in ways that have real-world implications for braking distances, tire wear, and parking garages with load limits.

That 478-mile range comes partly from the enormous battery and partly because the truck has to carry so much of its own weight around. One possibility is that as battery energy density improves, future versions get meaningfully lighter. But right now, you're driving something that weighs more than most box trucks.

The Price

Base is $98,600. The tested configuration was $103,715. That's Denali trim on a pickup truck, so some of that is premium features. But it's also just what you pay to get a 205 kWh battery into a production vehicle right now.

Whether that's worth it depends on what you're buying it for. If you genuinely need 10,500 lbs of towing capacity and want an EV to do it, the options are limited and the Sierra EV is competitive on range. If you're buying a truck as a status object and want to feel good about your fuel costs, the charging math won't deliver what you're expecting at public stations.

The Takeaway

The 2026 GMC Sierra EV Denali proves that you can build an electric truck with legitimately usable range. Four hundred seventy-eight miles EPA, confirmed by actual road-trip data, is real. The 350 kW charging capability means you're not sitting at a station forever. The truck specs (towing, bed size, air suspension, rear steering) check the boxes for actual truck use.

But the charging cost parity with gasoline is an honest issue, not something to wave away. And at nearly $100,000 for a base price and nearly 9,000 lbs of curb weight, this is a truck for a specific buyer with specific needs. It's not the Cybertruck's approach, and it's not trying to be. This is a conventional truck that happens to be electric, done at a very high spec level, for people who need that.

The range is impressive. The rest of it requires being honest about what you're getting and what you're giving up.
